Medicines Administration

Guidelines and checklists/ Drug preparation/ Administration technique/ Omission errors/ Other

There are many opportunities for error during the process of administering a medication to a patient, including mistakes in drug concentration/dose, route of administration, infusion rates, drug preparation, patient identification, duration/time of treatment, omission errors and incorrect administration technique. The administration of medicines is an important aspect of professional practice for nurses and midwives which "requires thought and the exercise of professional judgement" (NMC). Improvements in administration errors may result from tools, such as guidelines, and system approaches, such as improving patient identification or reducing interruptions on drug rounds.
